Characters
There are many players who play Sallyball on a regular basis, but here
are some profiles and avatars of the leading players and their various
qualities.
Alpha Male
Widely traveled and a wild man in the pool, Alpha Male has admirers and
detractors. His style of play is to win at all costs and is a valuable
player in a closely contested match
Ivan The Terrible
This ex-basketball college player brings his pinpoint skills to the Sallyball
net. While not the greatest swimmer, his devilish placement make him indeed
a ‘terrible’ player to come up against
Quite Evil James
A local hotelier and bon vivant, this boyish-looking player has great
consistency and placement. He serves the ball as he does his hotel
food; with panache and great style
River Man -
Half man, half river, this player has lived in and around Goan rivers
for a decade. Unlike local fishermen, he doesn’t wait, he attacks
and also possesses the special weapon of ‘the fist’.
The Bisector
This player can swing it both ways and is unerring in spotting gaps on
the opposing side. Move 20 centimetres too far from centre and he’ll
bisect you before you know it
The Brazilian
A midwife by trade, this player always delivers. Ambidextrous and with
powerful wrists this player pulls shots out of the bag faster than she
brings babies out of bodies
The Eagle
One of the biggest enthusiasts of the game, this player’s reach
is enormous. He can retrieve any ball from the most hopeless of situations
and is hardly ever lobbed
The German Spinner
This player is the Roger Federer of Sallyball. With a strong left hand
as well as right, his legerdemain and wicked spinning shots have overwhelmed
many opponents.
The Jet
New to the game but rapidly becoming one of its masters, this player loves
all sorts of water sports action. His determination to avoid defeat
at all costs makes him an opponent to have on your side
The Bomb
Also known as The Rocket when net heights are lower, his patented Bomb
shot thrown high in the air to land just over the net is much-copied but
retains its originality The Surgeon - This player knows every centimeter
of the court and her placement skills set her apart from all other players.
If the ball goes past you, it will be in, if the ball goes past her it
will be out
The Wall
Also known as The Kremlin Wall, this Russian player has consistency and
power. His desire to win is strong but so is his right hand, so beware
besieging this player Von Trappe - Another new player, but also a master.
Formerly a skateboard champion , boarder and with no body fat all, this
player brings not only the hills, but the pool, alive
